We stayed at the hotel over the Canada Day weekend. As it was fully booked we were not upgraded (but did not expect it). There was a power failure on the eve of Canada Day in the hotel and the area all around it. The hotel immediately had management all throughout the lobby explaining the situation to the guests and what were the options re room access, restaurant, etc. After the power was restored all guests received a written note under their door explaining what had happened as well as an email - excellent response to an unforeseen situation.
On Canada Day there was a wide variety of unlimited free 'treats' for the guests in the lobby including red and white jelly beans, donuts with red and white icing and a Canada Day themed photo-booth with every imaginable prop. As well, guests received a Canada Day 150 gift bag (placed in the rooms) containing a mini ice-wine bottle and corkscrew, Canada Day 150 themed money clip , key ring, wrist bracelets etc.
Yet another positive was the ability to go into the first floor dining room and order anything from a glass of coke to a full meal - there was no preference given to diners who wanted to spend $$$ on a meal versus those who just wanted a coffee or cool drink as is often the case, and especially in high-end hotels.
