Green Performance and Tracking

Green Performance and Tracking

Since 2006, our hotel’s green committee has been the foundation of our success and movement towards reaching our environmental goals and reducing our ecological footprint. Our committee is a group of dedicated associates, (one from each department) who work towards an aggressive company-wide goal known as: 30/20 by 2020. The objective of this goal is to reduce energy consumption by 30% and water consumption by 20% by the year 2020.The 30/20 by 2020 goal is a three part plan which includes behavioral changes and operational improvements, lifecycle replacement/renovations and product innovations.

Westin Ottawa Green Committee

Our 2013 Westin Ottawa Environmental Goals focus on three areas: energy savings, waste diversion and community involvement

  • Utilities Goal – Reduce utility consumption by 2.5% year over year
  • Waste Goal – Increasing waste diversion rate to 65% from 56%
  • Community Involvement – increase presence in local community and focus on education/awareness to hotel team (3 events total)

Our commitment to the environment at The Westin Ottawa is measurable, and we invite you to learn about our green performance and tracking metrics.

Our guest room renovation focused on adding and installing multiple energy savings devices which has a major impact on our energy and water consumption annually. By making these changes, we have saved enough electricity in one year to power a small town for one full day (3627 homes!) and enough water to fill 773 bathtubs.

In 2012, the Westin Ottawa diverted 56% of total waste from the landfill.

We composted 128 metric tons of organic waste which is equivalent to the weight of 2 Boeing 747 aircrafts!

We also recycled 46 metric tons of paper - enough paper to save 782 trees!

We continue to track our energy performance monthly by utilizing Energard, a utility benchmarking program and we participate in Starwood’s Carbon Disclosure Project on an annual basis.
